Upcoming Summer in VA Beach

This will be first time owning a home during the summer time and I was curious if there is any kind of preventative maintenance a home owner can do on an air conditioning unit to minimize the chance of any technical issues. I have never messed with AC units so I do not know what I can do myself! Any pointers or ides will be extremely helpful!
Thanks!
Zach

Making sure there's clean filters and the outside units fins are not all loaded up with trash is about all a DIY can do.
Might want to have a HVAC company come in and do a systems check.
