turn off pilot light on gas furnace safe?

Can I turn it off for the summer? Just moved into mobile home and the furnace throws off a lot of heat. It has a knob to turn the pilot on or off. Is it safe to turn off? It won't leak gas will it?

Yes, you should have another on-off gas valve.
