Tstat bad or what

I have a Trane xl90 heat pump with gas backup and this has happened a couple of times in thw last month, the temp drops and the furnce runs and runs I noticed this past weekend it ran for an hour and never cut off till I shut it off. I checked the temp at the tstat and it was 70.5 and tstat was set at 68 but wouldn't shut off, so I cyled power to the heat system and when the tstat came back up it read 70 degrees just as the themometer read. But when it was running before it only read 68, could this be a bad tstator what if so what is a good programable tstat to get to replace this currently has TAT500 I have heat pump with gas backup and ac.
Thanks

Try changing your filter... Make sure its not clogged, it will really kill the performance of any system.
