Trying to Find out Age of Trane AC Unit

I have been having problems with Trane AC unit cooling my 1277 square foot-2nd floor apartment. It cools it during the day, but it gets up to 80 degrees at night when it is 90 degrees outside and my thermostat is on 74. The people underneath me do not have a problem and their bill is about 260 during the summer while mine is about to be around 500. By the way they keep their unit on 75. I have two vaulted ceilings but they are not the high vaulted. The serial # is Y18212817. From previous postings that I read it was made in 1985! The apartments claim their is nothing wrong with my unit (2.5 ton), the insulation is fine, filters have been changed, digital thermostat was installed. Ceiling fans installed in the living room and one of the three bedrooms. Curtains are up on all of the windows except for the little kitchen window and my sons bedroom window (1). I am not sure what else to do to get the apartments to take care of their equipment. By the way they made me pay for my own ceiling fan.

yep it's 24 years old. It's old and tired. Time to have it looked at. You may have a dirty outdoor coil, inside coil plugged up, low on gas which would mean you have a leak. With out looking at it myself I would have to assume that it must have cooled fine for the past 24 years so I would not think size would be an issue. So I would start by having it checked out but keep in mind they don't last forever and it may be time to have it replaced.

like mentioned a dirty condenser and room for more freon after the cleaning could be a fix there...if it had been running OK earlier in the cooling season.if your the top of the condo then the roof or attic is also a load adding to your system ,where you in turn cool your space and your neighbors runs less to maintain its temps $$$$.any direct sunlight into the occupied space onto walls or furniture adds to the load and further away from making your stat setting and costing more to run.if you have a thermometer of some kind take the temps of the air into the condenser and discharged out(10f)rise..then the inside air handeler at the filter thn just on topot at the nearest supply register(18F)drop.check it out and get back on those........if it had be working and seemed to cool then you noticed the bill going up monthly with slower cooling might be just a cleaning.have you ever had freon added?

The apartments said that they had two different ac techs come and look at the unit along with the maintenence men. They say that my unit is fine. They said that it is fine on freon and that there is nothing else they can do. Is there an apartment regulation or someone other than the company I can go to for the problem to be fixed?

Well you have a couple of different options.

1. Look at your lease and see if it says anything about the a/c and comfort in it. It sounds like they are done looking at it and you got what you got.

2. See if you can hire a company to look at the system and pay for it yourself. Have them write up and explain what they find they give it to them to review.

3. Live with it

4. Move

Trying to Find out Age of Trane AC Unit

i've just transferred into a big room with an old Trane split-type A/C unit. Where can I find the Serial number? All I can see is the cooling unit and the controls. If I can find the Serial number I will request the manual for proper servicing. Thank you!

I found the serial # on the outside ac unit right above the model number. I am not sure if there are other areas to where the serial # can be found.
