troubleshoot thermostat 6 wire

trying to help a friend. Someone told him thermostat was bad. He bought stat for 4 or 5 wire and when i pulled old stat down realized it had 6 wires. He says that when set on heat air handler continues to run set temp is reached. I would like to trouble shoot my self. I believe wires on existing stat were labeled g-green, y-yellow. y2-orange, r-red, w-white, w2-black i think. Any ideas?

troubleshoot thermostat 6 wire

Your new thermostat would have to support 2 stage heating and 2 stage cooling. There will most likely be a menu on the thermostat that requires configuring.

I replaced old with new thermostat for 2 stage heat and cool. Still have same problem when I called for heat and desired temp was reached it still continued to run so I turned off thermostat and it still stay on. I had to determ R then G and it stopped. Is there a limit or something I can check that might be holding fan on? Maybe a switch thats supposed to open that is not?
