Transformer keeps blowing

I would have to bet that you are correct on that one. I say that because the same time I had my system installed, my boss had the same exact system (by the same person) installed in his house. His motor just recently went out on him and he had it replaced.

Is there anything I can do to test the motor out? It seems to be running perfectly at this point. Also, is there a way for me to file a warranty claim to get an "extra" motor, so that if mine does in fact go out, I have a replacement? or is that something that has to be done by a licensed HVAC co? and if a licensed HVAC co were to file a claim for me, does Payne need my old motor in place of the new one?

Thanks in Advance
Mike

The motor would have to be actually changed to get warranty. I would be willing to bet it would have to be done by a contractor. They won't give you a motor without returning one. If it is done by a contractor we order motor, install it, return the old one, and get a credit for the motor. this means we don't even actually pay for it. This realy should not cost that much. I would think less than 2 hours. In my area that would cost 150.00 to 200.00

Okay, that makes sense. What is there to test with the motor though? It seems to be running like it should. Is there something I can check?

Probally not anything you can check. They make tools which can test these motors. but the tools are mostly to see if the will run they are expensive. IIRC this air handler only has two eltrical parts in it the transformer and this motor. inside the motors housing there is all the motors mechanics and all the relay for it and for the electric heat. It is pretty much the only part which there is to fail other than the transformer. It is the only thing that I could see which would burn up the transformer when hooked to ground. If you don't have it changed now I would definately change before the five year warranty expires (10 years if the equipment was registered with payne when installed by owner or installer).

Okay. Would it be worth me taking the cover off and attaching the ground again to see if the transformer does infact blow again? (I have a spare now), and if it does blow again have it checked out...

you can I would not recomend doing it on Friday afternoon. not worth breaking anything over the weekend.

You may want to check with the power company and your homeowners insurance to see if either would be willing to cover the repair.
