Default Trane XL1200 - Outdoor Unit Problem

We have a Trane XL 1200 Heat Pump. The unit was installed in 1999, we bought the house in 2005. The cooling coil died right before we moved in and was replaced in Aug '05. In the summer of '06, when we first changed from heat to cooling, it wouldn't come on. Turned out it was tripping the breaker. So last year, we turned the whole system off for about 6 hours before trying the cool setting, and everything was fine.

This week, when we tried to put the AC on, the outdoor unit does not start. The thermostat symbols show that the cooling is on, but the air is not cold enough to cool the house since the outdoor unit isn't on.

We have tried resetting the breakers for both the indoor and outdoor units, and turning the whole system off and then back on. Still nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

By what you're saying it sounds like the contactor on the condensing unit has failed possibly a burnt coil on the contactor.

Good luck. The worst heat/cool unit I ever owned was a Trane. It hard to stop a train because you can't get it started. Ours worked great for 3 years then it was something every year.
