Trane XE85 will not shut off

I have a Trane XE85 system with a heat pump and a 3 zone controller. In the summer everything cycles on and off just fine. When it starts to cold and I switch to heat I begin to have problems where the blower and aux heat (gas) continues to run even though none of the thermostats are calling for heat. If I turn them all to OFF, it still stay running well past a typical cool down time. If I pull the breaker of course it stops. The temperature will get very toasty if I don't intervene. The heat pump is not running during all of this so it's not the contactor. Could it be the blower system contactor, which worked ok in hot weather? Thanks in advance.

Hi HomeImproveDave

It sounds like to me that you have a control voltage miswire. Have it checked out by a qualified technician. You can potentially ruin your heat pump if the gas furnace is coming on with it.

Good luck

Trane XE85 will not shut off

Let me give more detail. It has worked ok in the past but periodically it would stay on past when the thermostat had clicked off. It seems like the colder the outside air the worst the problem. When it's running on too long, the heat pump is not running, just the gas aux heat. The aux light on thermostat does not come on during this condition.

One more thing that I should add to the information about this installation. It has a 3 zone device, I can't think of the brand but it was bought out by Honeywell. If this device is malfunctioning, could that cause the blower to keep running along with calling for Aux heat? Also, there have not been any change or modifications to this system during the last 5 years that I have owned this house.

Yes, it could be your zone panel is causing the problem.
