Trane whole house filter - Is it worth the money?

Im having my central air unit replaced and the HVAC guy is suggesting that I get a whole house filter (I cant remember the name of it). I looked it up online and found mixed reviews. Im wondering if it is worth the extra $800.

Is it the Trane Clean Effects air filter.

Some people rave about it. Others curse it.

A 4 of 5" media air filter will work as well.

Thats it. What about the cost of the 4-5in filters? Is it cost effective to use them?

Thanks.

I installed an FA300 (Honeywell) back before the heating season, and it works great. It has really kocked down the dust levels in my house, and helped a great deal. The only thing I do not like is the increase in electric use with it.

You can pay for good media air filter elements. or for the electric use of an electronic air filter, along with cleaning it regularly.
