They are both very good and comparable units. I would go with the family friend as that is a very good price. We sell it for around $3500-$4000. As long as the friend does a good job and is not a hacker you should be okay.
Hes actually doing more than the other guy, hes cutting the big metal square thing thats in the middle of basement down to half its size to save room which the other guy wasnt going to touch. Than hes going to redo the pipe that is like on top of the furnace which the Trane guy wasn't going to mess with. Hes putting in a new thermostat which the one I have it only a year old so maybe he will knock the price even lower.
The big brown reddish thing is your return air drop.
Depending on what size furnace is installed. You don't want it smaller.
Same thing with the supply lines. Depending on furnace size. You need then as big as the y are. or your furnace will run at high temps. And you can end up with loud duct work.
Return duct looks to me like it needs reducing. We use 10x25 inch and a 16x25 opening on the furnace up to a 90,000 btu unit. Sounds to me like the family friend is okay.
If your thermostat is a cheap one then go with the one he recommends. The cheap ones can cause problems with the circuit board in that furnace and you don't want ANY problems. I would get a 5" pleated filter in a Healthy climate filter box from Lennox installed. Makes it a LOT easier to get return air into the furnace like Beenthere said and extends the life of the furnace.
Look at page 4 item 4. It is the air filter for the furnace and goes between the return duct which goes into the side of the furnace you have now and are getting.
