Trane only vent motor coming on.

When I turn on my heat the vent motor comes on for a few minutes and then quits. After couple of minutes it tries again with the same result. It keeps doing this and the burners never ignite. Any ideas?

It could be a number of things. Could be as simple as a gas petcock turned off. It could be a bad ignitor, limit switch, defective gas valve or it could be a blockage in the vent pipe.

How old is the unit?

It was installed in 2003. Gas is on. Unsure if ignitor is glowing or not. I will do more research when I get home tonight.

See if you have a light on the circuit board that's blinking., Count the blinks . look on the blower panel for the code.. You can also check to see if ignitor is glowing or not

Got home and turned the furnace on and it worked! don't know why. I have a Trane XR90. The red light on the board was blinking. No morse code just steady blinking. I still think this has potential to happen in January. I live in MN and that won't work. Should the red light be just "on"?

Any reason why it didn't want to fire last night but now does?

If it's been off all summer . It could have just misfired on the 1st try.. May not happen again.. If there is a problem with it . It will happen again.. Might want to try it several times to be sure it will work when you need it

Could it be that the ignitor was dusty and it took a while to burn off? Should I remove it and clean it anyway?

lyssa98, glad it's working again.

One question...did you happen to have any work done that involved disconnecting any of your gas lines since the last heating season?

Some times when a gas line is disconnected air gets trapped in a branch line and the gas valve on the connected appliance has to purge the air before gas will flow.

I installed a gas water heater next to it in the fall of 2009 and had no issues with the furnace that winter. Nothing since then.

Probably some sort of dust/dirt in the pressure switch hose, or a port on the switch or furnace.
