trane condenser - Is that a hard start kit?

I told my brother to install a 5-2-1 compressor saver on his trane condenser but I think it already has one. Look at the black cylinder on the bottom left.

Is that a hard start kit?

Thx.

The black cylinder is the start CAPACITOR. The white relay just above it is the start RELAY. Together they make up what some term a "start kit", and certainly not a "compressor saver".

They can be replaced, of course. You should replace both items at the same time. Generally you can get exact replacements at most well stocked HVAC houses.

However, if the unit does not have a start kit, and the compressor has no trouble starting, there is no reason to install a hard start kit.
