Thermostat reading incorrectly - cooling only

Hi Everyone

I'll try to explain this so it makes sense. I have a Lennox thermostat (old one not digital). In the winter the thermostat seemed to work fine when I set the temperature. But when I turn the a/c on cold air blows out of the vents and cools the air down nicely but never shuts off because the thermostat is reading that it's 80 degrees in here.. the temp goes up for whatever reason but meanwhile the house is cool. I set it for 72 F and it goes down to 70ish according to the thermometer. I have to set the temperature to over 80 for the ac to shut off.. or just shut it off from the switch on the thermostat.

I am planning to buy a new programmable one but I wanted to check out if anyone knows why it's doing this first.

Hope this makes sense

Thanks

Cindy

If its the old mercury round t-stat it has to be level on the wall or you will get a big fluxuation in temps.

no it's a rectangular box with a slider on the bottom. I can't see what model it is.. just says Lenox. I believe it was installed in the early 90's, AC was installed in 92 (just bought the house)

The little temperature gauge that reads your room temperature has absolutlely no effect on the operation of your thermostat. It is the mercury bulbs behind the cover that tells ac to shut off or not. Probably out of calibration..buy a digital and be done with it.

And that's my plan.. I assumed it was the thermostat but I wanted to check with the pros!

Thanks for your input!

could be as simple as a draft in the wall where the stat wires come in from the furnace,if you can read the subbase temp and move the set oint up or down that temp it should click or cycle the cooling.....if it is a bi-metal in the stat might be fatigued.go with a nice digital with wake/leave/return/sleep 7-day.
