thermostat location

Need some help with thermostat location. currently it is in the living room above a return air vent and works well there, however i have a fireplace also so if i run the fireplace it prevents the furnace from heating the rest of the house. I tried to move the tstat to the hallway inside wall and it did not work well . system ran nonstop for over an hour trying to raise temp from 17-21C at -6 outside. must maybe be dead airspace the living room was at 22 then. any ideas on how to find a spot other than trial and error?

Hey Trump. Im not a pro or anything but the HVAC tech that came to my house said never run a furnace and burn a fire at the same time because the furnace will suck the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide that the fire gives off into your home. Not sure how true but something to look into.

Thats true if your home doesn't have enough fresh air coming into it. or if your supply ducts leak more then your return ducts do.

I would turn the thermostats fan switch to "on" and circulate the heat through out the house. The thermostat will generally turn the furnace on if the fireplace doesn't put out enough heat.
