Thermostat Install Help funny wire
I am installing a new Honeywell digital thermostat from an old analog one. On the old analog thermostat there is a wire labeled A along with G RC W Y RH(connected to RC). There is no A on the new thermostat where do I connect it or connect it at all ?

The New thermostat has the following labels connectors: Y G RH RC W
Thanks for all your Help

What is the thermostat connected to.

Not sure I get what you mean. The old thermostat is connected to the wires still. The new one is not connected to anything. I talking about connecting the wires. I don't know what the A wire is or were to connect it on the new themostat

you probably don't connect it to the new stat. but he was asking what equipment you have and if you have checked inside your furnace or air handler what the A wire connects to there. DO you have a heat pump, boiler, gas furnace?

jhare215 01-05-2011 08:12 PM

No Its an electric furnace and the old stat has six wires and the new stat only has a place for 5. and the odd wire is labled "A". So should I just cap it off. Sorry about the confusion. and thanks

BTW I haven't looked at the inside of my unit

is it electric only furnace, no heat pump? Can you post a pic of old stat?

jhare215 01-05-2011 08:18 PM

one second I think i can

The brown wire is labeled yellow

and the yellow is the wire that is marked A

i agree open furnace door and see what A is attached to

jhare215 01-05-2011 08:44 PM

the wires are not even the same color inside the unit. I have no idea. Could you tell something from the picture its a clickable link.

hvactech126 01-05-2011 08:49 PM

do you have a model of old stat or name brand?

jhare215 01-05-2011 08:53 PM

heating- .15-1.2 AMP
Cooling-1.5 AMP MAX
Max 30 volts
Type 1F56W-444
Class 2
That is what it says verbatim off the old stat

Electric Heat Furnaces (Single Transformer Systems
The subbase as shipped may not operate the fan correctly.
If both the heating and cooling system must operate
the fan relay, remove the yellow factory-installed
jumper wire from the Y terminal and connect it to the A
terminal. The fan should now cycle when the thermostat
calls for either heat or cool.

tape up A and don't use. set new stat to electric heat so it controls fan in heating and cooling

Thank You very much I will tape up A and hook up everything else like normal. SO just out of curiosity what does the A do ?
