Tech says only solution ad a heat strip for $150.00

Model number WCH048F100AA 13 SEER 4 TON HEAT PUMP---- AMERICAN STANDARD

Will a heat strip stop the unit from running in defrost all night long? Last night had the temp set for 72 and it ran at 65 degrees all night long. Now they are saying I don't have a warranty on this unit!

I have the current situation going on below:

I live in Az. and when the temperature dips below 40 degrees the unit freezes up and it runs constantly in defrost mode- iced up. I set my thermostat at 70 and the unit will run and run at 65 all night long. In the morning the unit is covered in ice.

The unit is barely 1 year old and it is an American Standard heat pump 13 seer four ton package. The Technician has been out since day one and can't figure this out.

Several techs have been out and they can't figure this out. They can't find anything wrong with the unit.

I don't think you understand what defrost mode is. Defrost switches the heat pump into cooling mode so some of the house warmth is transfered to the outside coils to defrost them. Without back up heat the air coming out of the registers will be 40 degrees. In defrost the outdoor fan will shut off with the compresor running.
