tapping into cold air return

I have a hall closet that i use as a home theater cabinet. my reciever, DVD, and directv reciever are all in there and it can get a little warm when they've all been in there for a while, so I usually have to leave the door open. i have been thinking of a way to vent the closet with the door closed, and have looked at many different options. tonight i thought of a super cheap solution that I wanted to throw out there

My cold air return runs directly behind the closet, so I'm wondering if the cheapest and easiest solution is to just cut a 3" hole through the drywall and into the return, and screw a $15 USB powered fan over the hole so whenever the reciever is turned on it will push the warm air from the closet into the return.( I assume the sheetmetal is right behind the drywall). The closet and hallway have hardwood floors, so i figure there is plenty of space between the bottom of the door and the floor to allow cool air to come in

Does this make sense? Any potential issues with going this route?

Code prohibits a return being in a closet. So it would be a code violation.

Why not put a grate/louver in the door?

If there's attic space above the closet why not put a bathroom fan up in that b!tch? This is DIY after all. If you wanted to get real crafty you could make it operate by closet temperature, yeeeaaaahhh boyyeeeee!

my doors look like this

and is located in the main entrance hallway, so i thing a grate would look odd, and more importantly my wife would hate it. If it was in the basement or in a bedroom I would replace the entire door with one of those louvered doors like you see in laundry rooms

It's on the first floor, so no dice. I will probably stick to my original plan which was to put a vent in the side wall, I just thought going into the return would be super easy, and not require me to have to put grates up anywhere or have to come up with some ducting to fill the small gap the will be between the drywall

Just my luck. Would have been the perfect solution, cheap, easy and effective
