Suction Line Oil Trap - What are the rules?

When do you need a suction line oil trap? Is there a rule of thumb or a hard rule? Does it matter if the Compressor is higher or the Coil is higher?

I'm looking at about a 1.5 foot difference in height between the two..

What are you protecting, the coil or the compressor, or something else?

If the condensor is on a roof it needs to work harder to suck up the oil to the compressor. The manufacturer of the unit has specs for that height. Over 20 ft is necessary from what I remember (and that is fading as I get younger).
