Stream Radiator - Pipes and Radiators are making noises
Hello,
I brought a home last month, and i noticed that the heating pipes and radiators are making noises during startup. Is this normal? If not, how can I stop the noise? Any advise is appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

There are many things that could be going on here, you need to get more specific. It could be water hammer from steam passing blocked water in the piping from a bad trap or vacuum breaker. It could be improperly hung pipes, and a few other things at play.

Stream Radiator - Pipes and Radiators are making noises
Hi bigMikeB,
Every times when the boiler starts, i can heard on the radiator like the water is coming up from the pipes. This causes the banging noises. I have also heard that this is normal. Just want to double check. |

Sounds like an air noise, have you tried bleeding the system?

on steam......make sure your vent per each radiator isn't painted over or stuck with boiler off and radiator cold remove and it should rattle when you shake it....are all the radiators hissing steam when your heating the house?looking at the radiator as it stands it should be tilted a little towards the pipe end..put a liquid carpenters level on top and shimm under one side to tilt each one, this allows the cooled steam to drain back to the boiler and limit the knocking.if you have cold walls behind the radiators slip a piece of 1/2" styrafoam (Home Depot)with the foil backing behind them..cardboard for now will help.

Well if he's hearing water in the piping and radiators I doubt they are steam radiators, or he wouldn't have any heat in them and the vents would be pissing out condensate.

If it is a hot water system and you are hearing a "tick tick tick" or squeaking sounds, this is just the pipes expanding with the incoming rush of hot water. |
