stove top vent question

I'm re-installing my old stove vent. It has an alum one way valve thing in it so as to stop the air from flowing back in I guess. It's a little bent and doesn't work so well so I want to remove it.

Is there some reason to have a one way valve / stopper thing in the stove vent?

This is the style that has a fan inside the tube and the tube goes thru the roof and has a topper to keep out rain. The fan, tubes, everything else is in great condition and cleaned up well.

Sounds like you are talking about a Rangehood over top of your stove. If it is a little 3"X10" flapper, you can remove it IF your vent on outside has one. You are correct about it's purpose - Is a Backdraft damper to stop outside air from blowing into your rangehood.
