sticking gas valve

1 Attachment(s)
Hi i have a old btyant furnace 385s my gas valve is sticking. It's a old 24v gas valve that has 1/2 in 1/2 out with a escapement tube going to the old style 2H pilot and to the pressure regulator. it looks like the valve has a marking of pCi with the number 26266C stamped on it. does anyone know where i can get this valve OR can someone point me in the direction on what i need to buy to up grade this to a newer valve, regulator, pilot assy

looks to me like it might be time for a replacement furnace........... The savings in efficiency could well pay for the upgrade fairly quickly.

the pilot is a standing one(no spark ignition) with its own line off the line into the valve but not on it?if so you can install a Honeywell or White/Rogers straight 24V controlled valve(2 wires connect) what type of stat are you controlling the furnace with right now....just wondering?your local www.Grainger.com has a line of replacement gas valves do you have a thermocouple to proof the pilot to that valve...now. if so check out Grainger Honeywell valve #2E520 some body might kick in with something else just giving you a source for now... NOTE dont see any 1/2 X 1/2 valve comes with a bush up kit fitting most are 1/2 X 3/4

cant afford it right now. i just bought this house i need to keep it going to next summer everything in it ans been replaced already according to the maint stickers on the side new burners 2 years ago, new 1 pice blower assy, limit switch, fan switch, and new pilot burner 3 months ago. all buy the prev owners. i put in a new thermostat last week and air filter. last thing to replace is the regulator and valve.

no, the last thing and most important is the heat exchanger.

the old thermostat was a yoyo mounted next to the front door ???? so i re located it and installed a honeywell programmable more center of the house. the house is a ranch

Yes the pilot is a standing one with its own little tiny on/off valve before the furnace shut off valve.there are 2 wires comming from the pilot in series with the transformer---pilot---limit---thermostat---gas valve---back to transformer

The heat exchanger on the OLD furnace should be examined for defects by a professional before you put any money into it. Also, the pilot needs upgraded to include a safety device that shuts off the gas in case the pilot blows out.

Yeah this is VERY important. The new gas valve will have an internal regulator. It will also turn off the gas if the pilot goes out....the setup you have now will allow gas to continue to escape even in the event of a pilot failure. That's not a good thing. Imagine trying to light a pilot when the area is already full of gas.......enough said?

hvactech126 10-14-2012 08:47 PM

That type of setup will keep the main burner from coming on but will do nothing to shut off the pilot should it blow out and will keep dumping gas.

after a complete heat exchanger inspection...if safe.. use a standard 24 volt combination gas valve it will have pilot safety built in...ben sr:yes:

The sticking gas valve and the seperate reg get replaced by a standard gas valve. Adaptation to the gas pipe length and pilot tube end is needed.
Get a licenced HVAC gas fitter to do this so he can at least verify the integrity of the heat exchanger or it's all just a waste of time and money.

hvactech126 10-14-2012 08:53 PM

the upgrade of the gas valve may require a new pilot assembly as well to accommodate a thermocouple.
