Static Pressure Diagnostic Testing

Watch this video (both parts). Have you ever seen your HVAC company perform this important diagnostic test on your system?

For me, No.

Shawn is a tech rep, and he made a good video there. With 1 minor mistake. I brought it up to him. He won't admit it though.

You mean where he inserts one of the pitot tube tip in the wrong direction to the air flow?

No, he's using A303 static probes. The holes are on the sides, so they can point either way.

Its not what he did, as much as what he said.

I read the post where he got busted on the probe.

The probes he is using in that video can be pointed with or against the air flow. makes no difference. I use the same probes, and have turned them while checking units. Same reading in either direction.

Pitot tubes would be a different story.

Static Pressure Diagnostic Testing

Many times Earnie. Static pressure readings are part of our start up check list on all new equiptment. Didn't used to be that way but about 10 years ago the electric company required TESP on the rebate forms as part of the heat pump performance verification. That really opened my eyes so besides start up the magnaghelic comes out any time a problem is showing a possible air flow issue.

Static Pressure Diagnostic Testing

Hi Marty,

That is good to hear.

I have been through three Trane Comfort Certified companies and non have checked SP. These were companies that had never looked at my system before. You would think that being called to a new customers house you would want to do a thorough system check.

Most of the time all I have seen them check is coolant pressure. One did check amp readings. No one checked SP or air flow at each room supply.

It's unfortunate that I have to learn about HVAC to make sure my system is operating efficiently.
