Split System

Have an older 2 storey home with hot water heating and no ductwork. Wondering what my options are for introducing AC The house is 900 sq.ft. on each floor. Would a split system be effective and if so how many zones would be required? First floor has a fairly open plan but not the second floor. How do I balance this?
