Sound proofing safety in living room

I have a Carrier Infinity heater/air conditioner. It's great! Unfortunately, it's behind a wall in our living room, and we have very light louvred doors that separate it from the living room. Every time it turns on, I can hardly hear myself think.

Can I put Corning 703 insulation over the slats in the doors to cut down on the noise? Or will doing that overheat the unit and possibly cause a fire? Will the insulation even do anything for the noise?

Your help is GREATLY appreciated,
