Sound blanket question...

My central air system has the compressor outside my bedroom window (yeah, I know, real nifty design, eh?). Anyway, it's under warranty & the thing started humming loudly (kinda cycles from low to high to low on startup, then stays low, but still kinda noisy) The tech checked it & said it was working within specs. It does cool the house fine. He recommended a compressor sound blanket. From his description, it's a wrap around thingy that's supposed to cut noise. I'm thinking along the lines of a hot water heater blanket. Then he told me the price, $420!

My question is this... are these things effective and is that price reasonable?

Sound blanket question...

Yes it will help with the sound some, but that seems a little high to me.

Sound blanket question...

Go Bucks!!! (I used to live in Ohio) Thanks for the reply.

I got the tech to break it down and he said they would charge $150 for the install, making the part $320! (in my first message I said the total was $420, but I meant to say $470). They said it was a 'factory' part and they had no control over that. He offered to do the install for the $150 if I could get the part. So is there any sort of aftermarket thing on this that would be cheaper? And along those lines, is this a DIY sort of project, or do I need a professional install? Maybe my thinking is wrong, but this seems along the lines of wrapping a water heater.

One other thought... I have about 18 inches of clearance between the unit and my house wall. I could build a 'half-wall' between the unit and the wall about 4 inches thick w/ insulation . Do you think that would cut the perceived noise in the house?

Sound blanket question...

A generic sound blanket costs between $25 and $45 dollars dependant upon the model of your compressor. They are generally velcroed around the compressor and are quite easy to install. Shut off power, take off lid, wrap blanket around compressor and fit to suit, ensure it does not interfere with the fan blade or obstruct air flow and reassemble. I can see charging 2 hours for the install (pick up and delivery of parts) but paying anymore than $90 for the blanket sounds wayy out of line...unless it is imbedded with gold dust.lol

My thoughts exactly on pricing. It just seems incredibly high for what you get.

Sound blanket question...

Unbelieveable... I just received a quote for a sound blanket from a company. $60 plus $10 shipping! Hmmm... seems to be just a LITTLE difference from $320, eh?

Can these be installed by a homeowner? It doesn't appear that difficult unless there's something I'm missing?
