Simple air return grille question

Bear with me...

My upper floor has carpeting and had triangular air return grilles like this...

http://www.installerstore.com/triang...urn-grill.html

As they were 30 years old and I am changing trim to white, I purchased flat grilles like so...

http://www.installerstore.com/White-...rn-Grille.html

I plan on changing the flooring to laminate or hardwood within the next year or so. I like the flat style of vent because it doesn't stick out.

When I put on the new vent, there is a gap of about an inch at the bottom where there is no subfloor, just the carpet. Is this type of vent not to be used in this situation, or will I be able to extend the hardwood flooring an inch or so so that the entire bottom of the grille will make contact with the flooring?

I'm just wondering if I am only to use a triangular grill in this circumstance or if it's acceptable to use the flat one and deal with the flooring at a later time.

You still have some work to fix the missing subfloor and wood flooring, where the old vent was at.

Go with what works best for you. The Angled ones are like what we have in our house, due to it is over 75 years old, and personally I like them, because you get a better deflection with the gate over the opening, vs. flat fronted grills.
