shutting off gas

idk what room to put this in, so here it goings.

i need to remove a section of gas pipe in my basement. it went to a drier that is no longer there, and i want to put a wood burning stove there. the only gas shut off is on the meter. shutting it off seems easy enough. but sometimes things are not as they appear. so i am asking about any issues i may have shutting the gas off, and removing the section of pipe.

It is as simple as turning the shut off lever. Turning it on... open the valve slowly to avoid a big bounce of gas hitting the diaphragm in the regulator.

after shutting off the level go inside and see if your stove with light and burn, just to confirm the gas is off. just remember there is some gas in the lines between the shut off and appliance

thanx guys. i guess i am worried about the valve being seized or something. seeing as to how old it probably is.

As mentioned eariler,turn the shut off very slowly both off and on.There is sometimes an automatic shut off if the regulator sees too much pressure all at once.

That regulator doesn't have an over pressurization cut-off, but it does have a relief that could pop and sometimes they don't re-seat, letting gas escape.

Sometimes I have to use an 18" breaker bar to turn valves. If its very stiff, try turning it a little in each direction until it starts to turn freely. Be careful not to force it, as I've seen the key on the barrel snapped off because it was seized. Then, the gas co. will have to come out and change it.

If its really stiff, you could call the gas company to service it. Old valves will also leak around the barrel, so be sure to check it with soapy water after you're done. If it bubbles, it needs to be greased and worked, which is a call to the gas company.

i am now wondering = should i just call the gas co and tell them i need to have it looked at = i must be able to work this valve in case of an emergency.
do you think they would buy this ? and come out

Are you sure there's not another shut off after the main and before the dryer? The pipe is usually run after the furnace or water heater which have a shutoff.

No.in case of emergency you would leave the house immediately not try and shut the gas off.
Frankly,in a true emergency you wouldn't have time to shut it off nor would they want YOU to do it.

there is a shut off right by were the drier used to be. i need to take out about 15' before that.

is there any other "issue" i could use to get them to come out and service it ? the way i see, it is "their" meter, not mine. and it should function as intended.

what tool would i use to turn that valve ?

I think your asking for trouble by trying to close that shutoff.
It's been in the open posion for who knows how many years. It will not move easily.I would be concerned about another fitting coming loose in the process of trying to shut it off.

it will move..... where I am from the homeowner will get in serious doo doo if they touch it.... and remove there own pipe.... be carefull.....

i just went down stairs and looked around. PO's moved the washer/dryer to the main floor, and not long ago. so, unless they added the new pipes with the gas still on, i doubt that, then they closed that valve.

Hire a gas fitter to do this work, you're in over your head.
