Semi finished basment exposed ceiling

Hi,
We are finishing a couple walls in our basement and want to leave the basement ceiling exposed as the ceiling height would be 7 feet if closed in. We have some air returns in the joists with just sheets of I think aluminum nailed on joist to create the return path. What can I do to cleanup how that looks?

Its sheet metal panning. You can clean them with alcohol and then paint them.

It's more how it's uneven and just nailed down on the edges.

Remove and replace. You can use thermal pan in place of sheet metal.
