seer vs afue

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm ready to install a 3 trane dual fuel units in a new constrution home. I thought I was getting a 16 seer 90% afue unit. But at the last minute I discovered that a 16 seer 80% unit was being installed. Is there a huge difference? Thanks

Yes the 90% is more efficient. Depending on brand, most 90% furnaces are actually 92-94%. ie( on a 90% you will have a loss of $.06 - $.08 on a dollar vs. 80% = $.20 loss per dollar), so the difference adds up and the 90% will pay for itself fairly quick. But going with dual fuel the furnaces will not be running as much, therefore it will take longer to make up the difference

Alright, is the effiency rating only on the gas portion of a dual fuel? If so, it won't make that much of a difference as I live in a warm climate.

Yes, the AFUE is for gas only. The seer rating is for the electrical rating.
