Seeking Help

Bought a 1912 home that we are doing some work in and need to live in. Discover the boiler is no good. House uses steam based radiators. Would it be best to replace the boiler or just switch to a furnace? House is very large approx. 2900 sq. feet without the full basement and attic. Must be best economical choice to heat and maintain our home. PLEASE HELP !!

When you are asking about heating, insulation, etc., it is also a good idea to add your location. Florida or Ontario? It makes a difference.

Generally Speaking, if you have Cast Iron Radiators and steam heat, you have, in my opinion the best heat money can buy. My Grandfathers house had this heat, and it was always cozy, and nicely humidified in the winter months. The reason it is no longer used is cost, and cost alone. Cast Iron Radiators cost a fortune today. Once you heat up cast Iron the mass keeps the heat nice and even throughout the house. Don't let some sharpie talk you out of your radiators.

I would do everything in my power to keep this heat, especially if you are in a cold region.

You need to insulate your home. Post some pictures.
