RUUD gas furnace wont stay running

Watch the burners start and continue to watch as the main blower starts and continues to run for a wile. See if ther is a difference in the flame pattern before and after the blower starts.

RUUD gas furnace wont stay running

trying to arrange for the fellow that replaced the exchanger a couple years ago to come by today or tomorrow, forecast to get down in the teens overnight in the next day or so. i really hope the exchanger isnt bad again, are these parts by RUUD really that crappy? i thought 4 years was way too early for the first one to fail. if the second one is bad A) i hope it's under warranty as well and B) i would have to call/e-mail RUDD and tell them they should be paying for labor on at LEAST the second one! how hard do you think they'll laugh at that one? :-) i'll keep ya posted.

It really would be better to have someone qualified look at the unit, it already had one bad heat exchanger and now is having issues again.

Propane is very wicked and like some others mentioned, it might be overfired. Those rheem heat exchangers in the newer model package units are generally reliable.

RUUD gas furnace wont stay running

update: no fix yet, rained all day yesterday here so the heat guy that worked on this thing 2 years ago hasnt called back yet. cant say as i blame him, i didnt enjoy standing out in the rain messing with this thing either! lol. the flue is completely clean other than light soot which i would assume is normal. i watched the flames through several cycles, unit still shuts down after it opens the rollout within 5 minutes. the obvious problem is that there are flames all along the front edge of the entire burner assembly, no actual flame ever rolls out to trip the switch, but all of the excess flame heats up the frame the rollout is mounted too and opens it up. so, i tried shutting the gas valve until the point that the excess flames are diminished enough but the heater still fires and it ran enough to warm the house, cycles on and off normally per the thermostat. the gas logs wont light now because of the reduced pressure but they dont heat the whole house, so i opted for the furnace since it's forecast to be below freezing for the next week. any ideas on possible causes? can it still be a bad exchanger? hopefully the heat guy will get back to us soon. :-)

The gas pressure really needs to be checked by someone qualified and if it needs to be adjusted, then it needs to be adjusted at the gas valve in the unit itself.

Turning the supply valve for the house down is not the proper way to adjust that thing. Also, all of the other appliances that use propane will not be functioning properly and could have issues.

Turn the valve back up and shut the unit down until someone can evaluate and adjust accordingly.

Co5j, have you fixed your problem yet? Just curious as I am having the same problem with my Rheen Ruud Gas pack. New heat cells, new spark box, clean burners, heat cells are well seated. Flame rollout keeps tripping unless I leave the cover off. I think my gas pressure may be too high.

not fixed yet but i'll kepp updating for anyone interested. obviously, turning the valve down isnt the proper way to fix this and i already alluded to the fact that the cut in pressure caused the gas logs to be inop. that was expected and i opted to get heat to the whole house until the repairman can diagnose since nothing else uses gas.

Soot! You should not have soot of any kind on any gas fired unit. If you have soot you have a problem. Get it checked ASAP!

i'm assuming that the valve has been allowing too much gas through for about a week or more then, until it got to be too much and heats up enough to trip the rollout. leaving the gas turned down enough to heat the house for another night, repairman finally won our phone tag match and got a hold of me this afternoon, he's going to come out tomorrow afternoon then call and let me know whats up.
