rusted Peerless boiler ; bolts or studs ?
I need to remove the oil burner from a A Peerless WBV-03 boiler

The large flange up against the boiler holding the burner on is held in place by 4 very rusted - somethings. ;it's rusted so badly it's hard to tell if you're looking at studs with nuts or the large end of a bolt.

As I'm turning what I *think* are nuts the shaft inside the nut is turning too, which, if they are nuts on studs, cant be good (means I'm snapping off the studs).

Lots of PB Blaster penetrating oil and heat and tapping have done no good.

My next step is to grind away the nuts and hope to get down to good threads. On the other hand, if this is the good end of a bolt, I'm making a mistake.

I need to know if these are studs that are a fixed part of the boiler, or studs that can rotate, or bolts.

Help !

Same Problem

I am curious how you made out with the rusted studs. I have the same problem with my Williamson furnace and am not sure how to proceed. My burner is held in at three points. One bolt (on top) and a nut on a stud on either side. All three spin when I attempt to unscrew them.

stripped ?
I found useful penetrating oil here:
the only thing of it's kind that ever really worked for me, both at home and on my very old boat.

From what you are saying everything's stripped , no ? If all the nuts spin, the least destructive thing to do would be to grind them off, and hope the threads on the studs are OK. If they are not, it's on to a tap and die set ; drilling out the old studs and replacing them. I looked into doing that; not so hard.

To make a long story short, I got another boiler, free (!) on Craigslist

Good luck !

Free boiler? Only free ones I have seen leak or have been frozen and leak.

I was very lucky
It was a god-send , for sure. But I did more than look through CL , I saw people posting FOR things, and thought to try it. A woman responded that she had a good , working WM that had proved too small for her house. Took my truck, and a friend and hand truck; we couldn't get it up the steps out of her basement; I went around to local farms looking for help, and at last just saw a guy walking on the road; stopped and asked if he want to earn $20 for a 10 minute job; the three of us got it out of her house.
It's making heat now.
