run capacitor blew up caught fire in AC unit.
I have a 10 year old rheem 4 ton unit. Came home and fan wasnt spinning outside in the ac unit. The motor was HOT.
Opened up the first panel to find a capacitor expanded and black with chared paper wiring sticker. The capacitor is a 2 connector 370-400V 7.5.
I tested the fan by hooking it up to the pool 220V and it works fine.
When the capacitor was blown the motor hummed without spinning.
I tested the fan by splicing the brown and (brown and white) wires that were on the capacitor and connecting white and black to the 220 current.
In short my question:
Is this just a bad 10 year old chinese capacitor? or did the capacitor blow due to some other reason.
will another one pop as soon as i put it on?
THe " large" 3 connector capacitor looks fine ( the one mounted into the connection box.
The remanants of the fire inside that scorched the stickers from the oil expodign in the capacitor is what makes me nervous.
Cheap capacitors. I change lots of them.
Rheem used some real crappy capacitors from China and Mexico. My unit used an Aerovox plastic capacitor made in Mexico that failed after a mere 3 years!!
I suggest you replace your units capacitors with made in the USA Amrad caps.
If you simply replace the cap. with a generic equivalent then it could have the same problem.
I generally like Rheem but their choice of capacitors was terrible.
