Question

RPJ2 Blower fan will not stop running

I have a RPJ2 furnace which is 12 years old now. We had a storm in our our area last night with lighting which knocked our electric out momentarily. The furnace blower fan has been running none stop ever since the electric outage. I even disconnected my T-stat which is a (Honeywell RTH7400D I've had for 3 years) and the blower fan will still run without any connections to the T-stat.

I can only stop the blower by turnig the switch off at the furnace.

The A/C will run and go off via the T-stat, but the blower will go off for a second and then start running again none stop.

When I turn the blower on manually with the furnace switch, it takes about 45 seconds for the blower to come on and then it will run non stop.

Could it be a fried circuit board or a relay that is stuck, I've kind of ruled out the T-stat. I think the lighting knocked something out.

Can anyone give me some insight or help.

The board probably got damaged by the power surge. It is now unsafe to use for the heating cycle also. I would get a experienced Heil/ICP tech to check that furnace for safety as it has a history of cracked heat exchangers/popped compression rivets in the heat exchanger.

Is my best fix a new fan timer control board ?

I know the comfortmaker part number is 1009838 and is fairly affordable.

Is the installation of a new fan timer control board hard to do ?

To prevent unnecessary parts changeouts and find the root cause, post a schematic, but it does kinda' sound like damaged electronics at a minimum.

If you're in FL or the Ozarks, whole house surge protection would have spec's like these:
4000 joules, total
80,000 amps, max
Insurance, $5k per item
design lifetime 10 yrs.

I had no idea a surge could effect my heating and cooling system like that.

You should see what elec. surges do to some people.
And getting replacement parts is very difficult, depending on what part you fried.

RPJ2 Blower fan will not stop running

Update: after Thursdays storm and Fridays investigation. Late Friday night I was still doing the manual on /off switch thing at the furnace, after I ran a cycle I had to do a quick reset of the T-stat tempature, which put the T-stat in "Wait" mode. The blower finally cycled back in with the system and I've had no problem since.

The blowers is back to it's normal self.

I do however think the outage on Thursday really set this whole events in motion. I'm glad I waited ,and I'm glad I investigated myself to gain more knowledge.

I've since changed the air filter and cleaned the furnace/compressor unit inside and out. I've also cleaned the central A/C unit outside.

The system reminds me of a PC, it's very delicate and should be treated with care. This event has sure opened my eyes to the Heating and cooling units maintence and care.

They could have designed a software loop that would have detected and automatically reset this condition.

From another thread I infer that the factory knows how to reset this condition. They may or may not tell you how to do it.

More complexity = more fragility. My relay-logic furnace controller has never failed or even burped, since 1992.

And it's the same in nature; lower forms of life are unharmed by doses of radiation that would kill humans outright.
