Room size for furnace and AC?

Planning a future remodel to change the stairway to the second floor to an l-shaped staircase, there is a space under the stairway that will be increased by this, I'm wondering if this would be a good space for putting a new furnace and AC. Currently we have the furnace with no AC installed horizontally in the crawlspace, and I'd like to get a more efficient furnace and use the current one in the detatched garage.

So is it reasonably possible that I may be able to fit a new unit into the space I have under the stairway, I'd say it's a 3' wide by 6' deep space which will mostly be 8' tall after the stair remodel.
