Rigid Duct Insulation Alternative

Just had my first experience wrapping rigid duct with foil faced fiberglass duct wrap. Don't know how you guys do it but there must be a real learning curve to wrapping around 45 and 90 degree pipe.

So, maybe I read it here or elsewhere, but I seem to recall someone mentioning using flex duct to insulate rigid pipe.

Does it work? If so, can you keep the inner wire and plastic liner in place or should it be removed?

I'm replacing some flex with rigid so the flex will be headed to the landfill if not re-used.

Wrap the trunk and use sleeves on the hard pipe. Staple then tape the seams on the duct wrap.

I guess, theoretically, you could use flexduct to wrap ROUND metal ducts. But it would probably be more expensive than regular duct wrap.

More expensive material wise.
But faster labor wise.

Rigid Duct Insulation Alternative

After some hunting today I found a local HVAC company that had R8 flex in stock. Yes, extra cost and a bit of a waste removing the plastic inner air duct but using just the outer insulation sleeve is going to make my project so much easier.

Thanks.

If you get the next size bigger flex. It slides right over the hard pipe.

Leave the liner in it to start Earnie. Pulling just the insulation over a pipes sharp edge without the plastic "guts" is a pain in the behind. Goes much faster if you put the guts over the pipe end then pull from there.
