Rheem compressor

I need step by step instructions on replacing a compressor

JJboy 07-23-2011 10:57 PM

Recover the refrigerant.
Remove connector ( 3 wires )
unwelding 2 copper line
Remove the compressor
Install new compressor
Welding 2 copper line
Reconnect connector
Leak check with N2
Vaccum the system..... 500micron
Recharge the system
Check SH and SC.

That's it:thumbsup:

Test motor & capacitor

I had a repair man come by & told me the motor and capacitor are bad on a Rheem RAKA-037Jaz. How can I test both the motor and the capacitor to make sure both are broken?

if capacitor is bulged on top it's bad. you can get them on e-bay or a local HVAC supply store for $10-20. if you have a multimeter with capacitance capabilities, turn it to this mode (uF) and connect C to HERM or C to FAN (top of capacitor may have 2 or 3 terminals, depending if it is dual run or not). if it reads 0 uF, it is bad.

what motor is bad? the fan motor?

Wouldn't turning off the power be something to do also.

Don't trust your repairman? You would need a meter to check.

Replacing a compressor is like replacing an engine on a car leave it to the mechanics it's not really a DIY thing. Cleaning your own unit and minor troubleshooting along with replacing parts is OK but not replacing a compressor.

Need lots of specialized tools.
