return air vent modification

I have a closet that needs ventalation as it is becomming the componet closet. The return air vent is right next to it in the wall between the closet and hallway with the opening in the hallway. I wanted to know if i cut a hole in the wall and air vent on the closet side would that mess up the return air or would it just pull from both sides and work normally minus the extra heat from the componets? Would there be any reprocussions from doing this?
