Residential AC Unit - Can a stalled condenser fan cause other problems?

Hello folks,

I own a residential condominium which I rent out. The tenant called a couple of days ago with concerns of the AC, stating that it didn't feel cool enough, so I checked it out today. In the process of checking the system, I noticed that the condenser blower was not turning when the system turned on. A slight push of the blower will get it turning, but restarting the AC unit will not get the condenser blower motor started. So, I figure I should have a technician look at that. But running the system for about 15 to 20 minutes(with the condenser blower motor working) and all panels replaced, the air did not cool down.

My question is; can running the AC for a period of time, say a couple of days, with a stalled condenser blower cause other problems? Or, should have have let the system run a little longer to let the system cool down?

Thanks in advance for any offer of assistance/guidance.

B Christopher

Shut it down ASAP. It will cause the compressor to develop excess pressure/blows its relief valve and get damaged.

Yep. It can kill the compressor.

It could be that the condo was too hot for it to be able to blow out cool enough air.
Or, the condenser fan wasn't running at full speed. Which can also harm the compressor if it runs like that for a while.

Leave off until tech fixes/replaces fan.

Thank you for the quick responses!

It is likely that the unit ran with a non functioning condenser blower for some time(a couple/few days - off and on) before I received the call. It sounds like I may be in for more than just a blower motor from your responses, which makes me cringe a little. Albeit, I certainly appreciate your diagnoses!

To bad they don't put high pressure/temp cut outs on all equipment. I added them to mine just in case.

High pressure, low pressure, low ambiant and a liquid line filter drier, Used to be standard equipment until everyone started to dumb down everything and join the race to the bottom.

Yep, when price of the unit became more important then reliability and safety of the unit. All the safeties they could eliminate. Were eliminated.

Lots of customers pay for that very dearly.
