Hello, please advise on my ducting situation on 1500 sq ft single level home.
20+ year old gas furnace in garage and AC unit outside. Unit seems like on last leg and near end of service life. Downflow unit, ducting goes through crawlspace into floor vents. Air return/filter is in hallway ceiling going through attic back down into garage onto top of furnace.
Crawlspace is a nightmare. Only about 2 ft of clearance and with HVAC flexduct running all over down there its very hard to move around. Crawl has gotten wet and I'm in the process of fixing drainange issues with the property and in the crawl space as well as deal with rats that may have compromised the flex duct.
What I would really like to do is get a new upflow furnace installed or a heat pump and run new insulated ducting up into the attic and into ceiling vents to stay out of the crawl. Is this advisable? I want to keep the furnace or air handler in the garage and just run insulated duct up into the attic. Would vents in the ceiling only cause problems as opposed to having them in the floors? Could I have the vents in the ceiling and also keep the return in the ceiling, or would I have to put the return down the wall to get it closer to the ground?
Thanks for any advice!
