requirements for the boiler shutoff switch

looking at a new house- the boiler (oil fired) shutoff switch (the one with the read cover) is located on the boiler itself. in some houses i have seen this switch near the basement entrance.

does the code require any particular location?

thanks

the boiler is in the basement which is one open space (room). the bottom of the stairs is the first opening into that room..so will "bottom of the stairs" be the right location?

thanks

top of the stairs if there is a fire or smoke they don't want you walking to try to hit a switch..or flip it around and locate it in the kitchen wall before entering the room wife would love to match that color

they just don't want it so you head towards the fire or smoke place it high(your reach) near the last door in.carrying stuff down or into basement customers have hit the switch down and left for a winter weekend.....
