Replacing Trane XL90 Vent Inducer

I have a Trane XL90 (TUX080R942V2) with a noisy vent inducer (it vibrates as the speed ramps up & down and induces vibrations in the cabinet). Trane tells me a replacement kit is available which includes the vent motor/blower, a new circuit board and wiring. I'm not a HVAC guy but installed the furnace myself and am pretty handy with electrical/electronics and mechanical things.

This replacement kit is supposedly quieter than the original and contains a different type of motor and speed control circuitry so I am considering doing it.

Am wondering though if this is a DIY project or if special instruments or tools are needed?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.....

Can't help you with your specific problem but I can relate a similar experience with the very first single stage XL90 I had installed 25 years ago! The vent motor wailed like a banshee, too. The local Trane rep came out and agreed it was noisy and said they "have a new circuit board that makes it quieter". Well, they didn't replace the inducer motor so it was just as noisy, but they did replace the board which reduced the purging time from 2 min to 30 seconds. After that the main blower kicked in which masked the noise of the inducer fan.

easy job,make sure to install new gasket between inducer motor and heat exchanger

Heh, I guess that would help alright. I haven't measured it but the purge time on my unit seems like about 30 seconds (most of the time) but even that seems more than long enough. As you point out, the blower m/l masks the inducer noise (but not entirely in my case). The new "kit" contains a new style inducer motor so hopefully it is quieter (at least that's what the local Trane rep tells me).

Thanks, I think I'll go for it (but after the heating season ends in case something goes haywire).

Do you know if the kit has the new gasket? Is there anything I would need that the kit does not contain?

it should come with one of those fuzzy gaskets
