Replacing Furnace cold air return

I'm replacing a 2 1/2 ton horizontal flow furnace up in my attic. I'm going from a York to a Goodman with a B case. The old one has a 16 in. flex hose going into a rectanguler box that attached to the bottom of the furnace. Due to the different size cases the box will not come close to working. Can I take that box off an attach the flex duct directly to the bottom of the furnace or do I have to have a new box made. Thanks for the help.

no you don't need a new box, just a rectangular to round transition like this

it's not ideal, you will lose some flow, a gradual transition is better.
