Replacement Ceiling Boots

So as I'm replacing the ceiling I've found myself it what feels to be relatively simple, yet unresolvable predicament.

The room I'm working on has two Ceiling Duct Boots coming off 6" round duct. The registers internally measure 14"x2.5". Everywhere I've looked, I've been unable to find a wall/ceiling grill to replace the junk that was in there (all I can find are floor vents in that size).

So I've looked at just replacing the boot with something more common. Problem I have is the joists are 2x8 (measure 7.25" vertically), and the round duct was run pressed up against the plywood above. All the boots I've looked at were a minimum of 7.5", which may be tolerable since it would just sit inside the sheetrock, but to get it to sit flush, I have to angle the boot onto the round pipe.

What do people do in this situation? Feel like there should be an easy answer, but its doesn't seem to be at Menards or Home Depot... (And I'm not much of a sheet metal worker, so I'd prefer not to go that route).

Make a box out of sheet metal and tap the side. Either that or buy the floor registers and drill 2 holes for the screws.

get round ceiling diffusers for the 6" round duct.
Cut your new ceiling to fit.

I saw those but was wondering how that works. Would I attach a piece of flexible plastic duct, put the sheetrock in, then pull that flexible piece through the hole and attach to the diffuser?

Take a couple of pictures of what you have and take the pictures with you to where you will be buying the sheetmetal and registers.
There are more than one way to do it and even at home depot they have people thyat can answer your questions.
If it were me I would use 4x10x6 inch boots because a rectangular register has more throw than a round register. You want the heat to hit the floor if possible.

Buy a 6" round elbow... and as much 6" round duct as you need to get the outlet side of that elbow where you want the diffuser. Support all that.
The use of tin snips is allowed in all this as is good foil duct tape.

Buy the damper/diffuser at the same time.
With these and the elbow in your hand you'll figure it all out in 10 seconds.
