A/C went out last summer. I believe I was told the compressor went out. It is an old unit and not worth the $800 to replace. Better to get a new unit.
Had Sears come by today. Quoted at around $4,000. Is that high? They talked about needing a new coil and some minor duct work. My house is small and around 800 sq ft.
I am planning to sell soon and need it repaired to make the house desirable. Looking for a smart, cheap option.
The smart option would be to never ever call some box store that hires outside contractors to install anything.
Get out the yellow pages or ask your friends at work who they use.
Boy do I second Joe on this one. Giving in to the boss I called Lowes to put a new floor in my kitchen. What a disaster. These guys were as bad as you can get. Cut the underlayment in the house. Dust everywhere. Put the factory edges of the underlayment under the cabinets, and the cut edges in the middle of the floor, fastened the UL with staples instead of screws and did not hit the joists, and the icing on the cake, ended up with blisters in the hard goods. They said they would go down. I said they were unadhered areas. They never went down. Their fix was to cut the blisters and squirt adhesive under the unadhered areas. That broke the camels back. I threw them out on there ass. Lowes never did make good. I told them how I wanted it done. They finally agreed I was right, then they tried by sending the same guys back without enough material to replace what they screwed up. They never came back, and I ended up putting down my own floor.
I own a 800 sq, foot rental.
I installed a 2, ton mini split. Heats and cools perfect, no ducts, super cheap to run and quiet and 1/2 the price you quoted.
I used to have to go up aginst the box stores for siding, windows, ECT. everytime my price without even seeing there's was 1/2 of what there price was. And I still made a profit.
I've been on many a job going behind the hacks that did the jobs for the box stores and have been shock at what I've seen.
Sounds to me that it is worth the $800 to you just not to the guy sell to.
