Replace Indirect-Fired water heater with tankless?

The water heater is leaking and needs to be replaced. While doing some research I couldn't help but stumble on the tankless but they appear to be gas driven and I have an oil burner with no access to nat-gas. Instead of getting another Indirect-Fired heater could I get a tankless?

not w/o nat gas or you can go with propane but the tank rental and delivery chgs are expensive so it may not be worthwhile. if your elec rates are not 2bad then you may want to go with an conventional electric tank if your elec panel can support it.

You need to look at the electrical requirements for the electric tankless units. In some cases it's more than the whole house.

I did a lot of research into it....

If you have gas....payback is a long time....

If you are the type of family that gets up...showers...and no one is home for 8 or more hours....and then you have another surge of use in the evening....tankless can be worth the money...

But if your the type that uses water all day long....little to no payback.

If you've been living with an indirect and you go to a tankless you might find yourself with a major difference in how much hot water you'll have. I'm talking gallons per minute over time.

The tankless are "instant" but the gallons per minute they'll deliver is limited directly by the amount of energy input.

With an indirect the gallons per minute are limited by the size of the pipes in your house basically, the amount of time it can deliver this amount is limited by the tank size and how big your boiler is.

The difference will be seen when more than one hot water faucet is turned on at the same time unless you get a really big tankless.

If your demands are not 2high then a conventional 40 gal elec tank which only needs a 30 amp breaker may do the job nicely and not break the bank 2install. Tankless are very expensive and have the above issues.
