removing humidity from basement

I was wondering if i could add a small vent in my return in the basement to help remove some of the humidity when running the AC in the summer. I would close the vent during the heating system. Opinions? Thanks

You are not likely going to remove anywhere near enough humidity this way.

Your best option is to purchase a dehumidifier.

If you lwer your basement humidity, you could also increase your living area humidity.

Takes a large amount of air wxchange to remove humidity.

Portable dehumidifier will work better.

Don't know if your basement is musty or moldy smelling like some, but adding a return to the basement can circulate those odors around.

Dehumidifiers are designed specifically to remove larger quantities of moisture.

Beenthere: I had a return leak (now sealed) in my basement. I believe it contributed to my still humid basement. So my question to you is, does using a dehu in the basement also cause an increase humidity in the living area?

Dehumidifiers remove moisture in the air and release it as water to a drain or sump pump pit.

Removing moisture from the air lowers humidity...so in your question to beeenthere, did you mean LOWER the humidity in the living area?

If you use a humidifier in your basement. It will help with the humidity in your liing areas.

A large part of your air infiltration into the living/occupied areas comes through the basement.

So by lowering its humidity, you help to lower the humidity in your living areas.
