Question

Register and damper on furnace

There is a "return register" on the return duct on my furnace that is located in my basement. What is the purpose of this register and should it be open or closed (live in Michigan).

Also, there is a damper on the body of the furnace that has two positions that the previous homeowner labeled "winter" and "summer". Can someone explain the purpose of this damper also.

Thanks

Register and damper on furnace

Are there supply registers that feed the basement? The damper labeled summer/winter is most likely connected to a humidifier.
