reasonable price for 2 A/C condensers?

I had an HVAC company to quote me for installing 2 Air Condensors in my side yard for cooling only. There is no duct work, eletrical work, drain etc needed. All of that is already finished in the house. 2 Air handlers have been properly installed in the basement and the attic; and pipes come out at the right location to the outside wall. Point is, it is a straight-forward install-and-turn-it-on job, as far as I can tell.

So here is what he quoted me:
Unit 1: Carrier 15 SEER, 3 ton, Performance Series. $6,216
Unit 2: Carrier 15 SEER, 4 ton, Performance Series. $6,763

This seems a lot, doubling of what I thought it was going to be.

Questions:
1. Is this reasonable?
2. Could this be possibly a DIY job? (I am reasonably handy but with no HVAC experience. Then again, all the hard parts seem to have be done already.)

reasonable price for 2 A/C condensers?

This is an earlier photo taken in the Winter. Since then I already had eletrical boxes installed with wires running to the main panel in Spring.

All that needs to be done now is to install these two units on the ground and connect the refridgeration lines and the eletrical wires. Then fire up the units.

I would get a couple more quotes and make sure they know it is the condensor only and no lines. Something else to remember while shopping is if there are any rebates available.

And get the THIRD hvac contractor to come and give you a quote to add in electrical disconnect boxes. Or you can do it yourself but remember, the line is the main feed to the unit and hooks up to the line terminals in the disconnect (that would be the existing wire coming from the electrical service panel, the wires sticking out of your walls right now) and the LOAD would be the wires to the condensing unit from the disconnect, hooked to the LOAD terminals of the disconnect.

They are marked line and load but in small print.

I am going to assume you have Carrier air handlers so you need Carrier A/C's? The higher the SEER the more cost involved.

Match the equipment....like previous post what do you have for airhandlers? Model and serial number.

Is that a dryer vent that comes out between the 2 units?

1. I already have the exact electrical disconnect installed. the photo was taken before that as I said.

2. The vent between those two pipes is a bathroom fan vent.

3. I have Goodman air handler (ARPF486016BA and APRF364216AB). The contractor told me that I don't have to match the equipment. My number 1 requirement is that they need to be very quiet. And I guess that's why he recommended Carrier. But I am open to any suggestions.

So my questions still stand:
1. Is his price reasonable? I am in Cambridge, MA.
2. Can I do this myself?

You must match the equipment or stand the chance to lose efficiency and capacity. Systems are rated together and that is how you would get 15 SEER. mismatching systems could lose efficiency and there would be no reason to put in the higher efficiency equipment.

You can install these units. But you need to call a pro to vacuum and charge these units.

Ah good to know. So I really should look into Goodman condensers then. Is his price within the ballpark? I would only do it myself if his quote is too outrageous.
