Radiant Heat - How to Route or Melt XPS for Pex Channels

Hi everyone,

I am in the middle of a DYI radiant heat install. I have plans from my radiant guy. In the basement in order to prevent heat loss to the slab I was told to put down 2" of XPS then using a sleeper system lay my pex and then tile on top.

The overhead in the basement is tight and I had an idea. Instead of using sleepers, I thought making the channels in the XPS directly and then put osb or 1/4 cement board on top would be smarter. Yes 1/2 inch would make a difference.

Hoping to get some feedback on my idea and how to possibly get it down. As far as the channels, I could route the channels by hand or I was thinking of using a copper pipe and maybe heating it up and somewhat melting/molding the channels.

XPS gives off toxic fumes when it burns or melts.
